After graduating from the University of Southern California , Edward Woods began his acting career in the theater, including playing the son of Lionel Barrymore in the Salt Lake City theater in The Copperhead . In 1927 he made his Broadway debut in the melodrama Speak Easy , in which he starred alongside Leo G. Carroll and Ann Shoemaker . Until 1929, he played in three other Broadway plays, before he - shortly after the beginning of the sound film turned Hollywood -.

He is primarily remembered for his second film, the gangster classic The Public Enemy from 1931. Here he played Matt Doyle , the best friend and sidekick of James Cagey's main character. Woods was considered a potential star at the time and was originally intended for the lead role, but director William A. Wellman was so impressed by Cagney that he had him swap roles with Woods shortly before filming began. Although he received critical praise for his appearance in The Public Enemy , Woods' further film career was mediocre: He played a number of major supporting roles in now largely forgotten films and also made a minor appearance as a bellhop in George Cukor's star-studded comedy Dinner at eight (1933 ). At times Woods returned to Broadway and played in a stage version of John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat in January 1938 .

After only 13 films, Woods retired from the film business in 1938. He then worked in production and marketing for 20th Century Fox and the Shubert Organization, among others . During World War II he worked with Ronald Reagan on commercials for the United States Army . Woods retired in Salt Lake City, where he died in 1989 at the age of 86.
