Edwin M. Lee
Edwin Mah "Ed" Lee (born May 5, 1952 in Seattle , Washington , † December 12, 2017 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was the 43rd mayor of San Francisco and its first mayor of Asian descent; his parents immigrated from Taishan in southern China in the 1930s . He was elected by the City Council on January 11, 2011 to succeed Gavin Newsom for the remainder of his term and on November 8, 2011 in a regular election for a full term.
Lee attended Bowdoin College and after graduating there in 1974 studied at the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1978 he finished his studies.
Lee was married and had two daughters. He died unexpectedly in San Francisco at the age of 65.
