Edwin M. Schur (born October 18, 1930 in New York City ) is an American sociologist and criminologist .

Life

Schur studied political science, sociology and law at Yale University and the London School of Economics , where he received his Ph.D. received his doctorate . After working at various US universities, Schur became a full professor of sociology at New York University in 1971 .

Schur's research and publications focus primarily on problems of legal sociology and theories of deviant behavior . Schur is considered an early exponent of socially critical criminology and the labeling approach . His definition of crime without a victim (for example in prohibited drug use) found its way into textbook criminology and sociology of deviance. His concept of radical non-intervention against juvenile offenders in particular was a contribution to critical criminology . His key message was: “Leave kids alone whereever.” Problems with young people should not be ascribed to them in order to treat them as “bad”, “sick” or “socially disadvantaged”. Juvenile delinquency, on the other hand, must be recognized as the price of the existing social structure and prevailing cultural values . Changes are necessary there, not with the individuals.
