History of the canton schools in the canton of Zurich

The oldest of today's canton schools is the Küsnacht canton school ; which was founded in 1832 not as a grammar school, but as a teacher training institute.

The first canton school in the city of Zurich was founded on April 22, 1833 with two departments, the grammar school and the industrial school . In 1842, the canton school moved into its first domicile at Rämistrasse 59 in the current building of the pedagogical university ("old canton school"). In 1904/05, the “Cantonal Commercial School Zurich” was founded as the third department out of the industrial school. When the canton took over the “Höhere Stadtschule” in Winterthur in 1919, the canton school had four departments. Until 1955, the range of high-school diplomas was limited to the cities of Zurich and Winterthur and only applied to boys.

After the Second World War, the canton of Zurich decided, tentatively at first, then definitively in the 1960s, to decentralize the cantonal school in order to remedy the regional inequality of opportunities for training. In 1952 , the Zürcher Oberland was the first to receive a regional canton school with Wetzikon . In the end, four projects were brought forward and arranged in a priority list: Oerlikon, Bülach, Urdorf and a second canton school for Winterthur.

Another important step in the expansion of secondary schools in the canton of Zurich was the takeover of the secondary school for girls in the cities of Zurich and Winterthur in the canton school in 1976 and the associated introduction of co-education. This increased the number of canton school locations by a further five within the city of Zurich and one in Winterthur.

The entrance examination has been carried out uniformly throughout the canton since 2007 (Zap). After the second and third secondary level, the examination subjects are German, French and mathematics.

In August 2012, the Oerlikon Cantonal School , which had existed since 1971, and the Birch Cantonal School , which was created in 2004 when the Riesbach Cantonal School moved, were merged to form the Zurich North Cantonal School , which is now the largest Cantonal school in the Canton of Zurich. In February 2013 the “Canton School Glattal” was relocated to Uster  and renamed the Canton School Uster  .

Two schools differ from the rest: At the cantonal maturity school for adults , adults can complete the maturity on the second educational path. The Liceo Artistico , jointly run by the Canton of Zurich and Italy , focuses on artistic design .
