The Liceo Artistico in Zurich is a public Matura school in the canton of Zurich with a focus on artistic design and immersion lessons in German-Italian. The school is run jointly by the Canton of Zurich and the Republic of Italy , which is why the Matura degree is also recognized by Italian universities and art academies. Organizationally, the Liceo Artistico is part of the Freudenberg Cantonal School .

profile

The Liceo Artistico is an art high school that connects to lower secondary level. As a special case among the Zurich Matura schools, which are designed as short-term high schools, training at the Liceo Artistico takes five years instead of four. There is also a numerus clausus of 48 students per year. The training takes place simultaneously in German and Italian according to the principle of immersion. For this reason, many teachers are Italian as their mother tongue. The Republic of Italy sends a certain number of Italian teachers to the Liceo Artistico every year as its contribution to the school.

Access to the Liceo Artistico takes place via a special creative entrance exam in addition to the normal entrance exam for the short grammar school. All graduates of the second or third grade of the secondary school as well as the third grade of the Italian Scuola Media are admitted to the entrance exam.

history

The founding of the school was decided in 1986 by the Zurich government council. The villa “Dem Schönen” on Parkring in Zurich was chosen as the location. The villa was built in two stages for the doctor Adolf Friedrich Hommel : 1898/1899 the corner wing with tower and entrances by Friedrich Kühn, 1902–1904 the extension wing with museum rooms by Chiodera and Tschudy . In 1963 the villa came into the possession of the Canton of Zurich and was used by the neighboring canton schools Freudenberg and Enge and was planned for demolition. After the conversion and renovation of the property by the architect Tilla Theus 1980–1986, the Liceo Artistico was opened on August 21, 1989.
