history

The roots of the Rychenberg canton school go back to 1862, when the industrial school and grammar school of the city of Winterthur were first run as maturity schools and were financially supported by the canton of Zurich. In 1919 the Canton of Zurich took over the Winterthur high school and the industrial school, which also gave it the solution to the urgent problem of space. In 1925–1928 he therefore had a new school facility built in the Lee area .

Due to the sharp increase in the number of students, the construction of an extension had been under discussion since 1942. In 1952, the government council of the Canton of Zurich approved a space program submitted by the school and in 1954 announced a competition for a new building, which was won by the Zurich architect Erik Lantner. Since the number of pupils continued to rise in the meantime, the convention in 1955 spoke out in favor of dividing the previous comprehensive school into two completely separate schools, which was organized in 1959. While the upper secondary school with the teacher training school remained in the old school building and was named Kantonsschule Im Lee , the grammar school was to be relocated to the new building together with the municipal girls' school as the Rychenberg Cantonal School . The year 1959 is therefore considered to be the founding year of the Rychenberg Cantonal School. The new building was built between 1959 and 1962 right next to the existing facility, on the area of the former Rychenberg cemetery.

In 1976 the canton also took over the Winterthur girls' school, which was converted into a secondary school and remained part of the Rychenberg canton school. In 2009, the canton school Rychenberg was shown on a ranking list of the ETH Zurich as the canton school that best prepares for an ETH degree in Switzerland.

investment

A supplementary building to the existing cantonal school should first be built on the property. The flat roof buildings were built between 1959 and 1962 by the architect Erik Lantner in the style of Le Corbusier . The facility soon proved to be too small and had to be supplemented with extensions or quartered in adjacent buildings. The flat roof buildings from the 1960s were later classified as cultural assets of regional importance and are under monument protection .

Between 1987 and 1990, the facility was expanded to include a building designed by the Winterthur architects Peter Stutz and Markus Bolt for natural science subjects and a cafeteria . From 2004 to 2007, another extension was added that was used jointly with the neighboring Im Lee cantonal school, comprising a triple sports hall, eleven classrooms, three music rooms, a bicycle cellar and a media library. The Berlin Jost Haberland was won as the architect. The roofs were gradually equipped with a photovoltaic system that was set up for educational purposes.

Due to the increased number of pupils, the government council of the canton of Zurich decided in spring 2016 to renovate the cafeteria building and to add an upper floor with additional seats and three new classrooms. In January 2018, the converted building was finally put into operation.
