The Eel River (English for "Eel River") is an approx. 25 km long tributary of the St. Lawrence Gulf in the north of the Canadian province of New Brunswick . Alternative names are Rivière Eel and Rivière à l'Anguille .

course

The Eel River arises at the confluence of its two source streams Lebel Brook and Tardie Brook at an altitude of about 150  m , 10 km south of the city of Campbellton . From there it flows in an east-northeast direction to the sea. Its river course is in Restigouche County (Comté de Restigouche). Further north is the Restigouche estuary . A few kilometers above its mouth, the Eel River includes the North Branch coming from the north and the South Branch Eel River coming from the south. He passes the village of Eel River Crossing . Below the Eel River Crossing, the river forms an estuary, the Eel River Cove . The estuary is crossed by New Brunswick Route 11 ( Bathurst –Campbellton). A nearly 1.6 km long sandbar separates the estuary from Eel Bay , which is part of Chaleur Bay . At the northern end of the sandbar, opposite the Eel River Bar Indian settlement , the Eel River finally flows into the open sea. 3 km further north is the small town of Dalhousie .

Hydrology

The Eel River drains an area of about 180 km². The mean discharge 9 km above the mouth is 2.1 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges are measured at the water level in April and May with 5.54 and 9.36 m³ / s respectively.
