Effigie - The Poison and the City is a German historical and crime film by director Udo Flohr about the Bremen serial killer Gesche Gottfried , who poisoned fifteen people with arsenic . The screenplay is largely based on original files that only appeared in 1988. The independent film cost 400,000 euros.

In 1828, Cato Böhmer took up her new position in Bremen as clerk for examining magistrate Senator Droste. She wants to become a lawyer when women are not yet allowed to study in Germany. According to a complaint from master miller Steitz, the two are interrogating a suspected poison attack. Gesche Gottfried, an attractive widow known to be helpful, also seems to be in danger. But she soon turns out to be a serial killer who has poisoned her parents, husbands, children, her twin brother, friends and neighbors with arsenic. During the search for evidence, Senator Droste comes under increasing pressure from Captain Ehlers, who demands that the Senator promote shipping. Droste and Mayor Johann Smidt, however, see the future in railways. Cato Böhmer can barely ward off a political intrigue by the captain against the senator. It helps decisively in getting Gesche Gottfried to confess.
