Efrat Gal-Ed

Efrat Gal-Ed (* 1956 in Tiberias ) is an Israeli author , translator , literary scholar and painter .

Life

After completing her compulsory military service in Israel, Efrat Gal-Ed began studying Jewish , German and comparative literature in Cologne and Bonn in 1975 . Since 1978 she has also attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy , in 1983 as a master student with Gotthard Graubner .

From 1984 Efrat Gal-Ed wrote radio essays and features mainly for WDR. She focused on Jewish and Yiddish history and literature as well as Israeli music and politics. She translated poetry from Hebrew and Yiddish, including by Jehuda Amichai , Tuvia Rübner , Avraham Ben Yitzhak and Itzik Manger . Her book of the Jewish annual festivals (2001) is dedicated to the cyclical character of the festivals as symbolic stations in the relationship between God and the community of Israel, their emergence, transformation and consolidation in the course of history.

In 2009 she received her doctorate with a dissertation on Itzik Manger's early work. In 2016 she published the biography Nobody Language about this important poet in Yiddish . Itzik Manger - a European poet .

In 2013, she completed her habilitation in Yiddish studies at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , where she has been teaching as a research assistant since 2010. Efrat Gal-Ed lives in Cologne.
