Life

Egon Schmidt was born in northern Bohemia in 1927 as the son of a shoemaker. After serving as a flak helper, he was a soldier from January to May 1945. This was followed by internment, a labor camp and in 1946 expulsion from the ČSR. In Mecklenburg he was initially a stoker and caretaker's assistant until he began a new teacher course in Schwerin in 1947 .

After his first years as a teacher and a qualification course for lecturers, he worked in teacher training until the end of his life: first from 1951 at the Diesterweg Institute in Putbus , from 1955 at the Pedagogical Institute in Erfurt and from 1957 at the Pedagogical Institute in Güstrow , which later became the college of education. For many years he was head of the department for literature and head of the department for German literature and the German language.

Egon Schmidt taught, researched and published on German literature, especially children's and youth literature. In 1961 he passed the state examination, in 1966 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil with a work on Ludwig Reinhard , a Mecklenburg democrat and satirist of the Vormärz. In 1969 he became a university lecturer and in 1972 Dr. sc. PhD. In 1978 he received a professorship.
