The former Grand Ducal Ceramic Manufactory is a building in Darmstadt .

history

The former Grand Ducal Ceramic Manufactory was built in 1906 according to plans by the architects Lehmann and Wolff from Halle . The builder was Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig . The first manager of the factory was Jakob Julius Scharvogel . The work of the manufactory was in constant correlation with the Darmstadt artists' colony .

The building with a mansard roof was built in a traditional style influenced by Art Nouveau . A lower two-storey wing is attached to the compact, cubic central projection on either side. In 1914 another wing was added to the west side of the building . In the stairwell of the east wing there are still Scharvogel tiles with their typical dark brown speckled gray-white glaze . The exterior of the building has been completely preserved. An old well socket has also been preserved on the site.

After Scharvogel's departure, Well Habicht took over the management of the factory in 1919. Production in the manufactory continued under changing owners until the 1930s. After ceramics production ended, the building was converted into a large laundry.

After the Second World War , the fifth police station was housed in the building . In the post-war period, the building was expanded by adding another extension to the rear.

Today there are 66 apartments in the building .
