Syriac Orthodox Church of St. Ephrem
The Syrian Orthodox Church of St. Ephrem is a Syrian Orthodox church in the district of Lainz in Vienna's 13th district of Hietzing at Lainzer Straße 154a. The Roman Catholic parish church of Lainz and Speising, originally consecrated to the Holy Trinity , is today consecrated to St. Ephrem the Syrian .
Former Lainz parish church
An inscription above the main portal states that Conrad Sponfelder built a church between 1421 and 1428. This church was also looked after by the Penzing Church . The parish chronicle reports serious damage by the Turks in 1529 and 1683, whereupon a new church was built under Archbishop Sigismund von Kollonitz in 1736 with master builder Gottfrid Pokh, master stonemason Johann Wenzel Schumka and master carpenter Wolfgang Hilleprandt. Due to the increase in the population after 1945, the parish of Lainz Speising built the larger Council Memorial Church from 1966 to 1968 nearby .
St. Ephrem
The church was handed over in 1974 by Cardinal Franz König to the Syrian Orthodox community, represented by Episcopal Vicar Pastor Emanuel Aydin. From 2015, services for the Indian Orthodox Church are to be held in St. Ephrem , while the mother parish is moving to Maria vom Mount Carmel .
