The former state mortgage bank is an administrative building in Darmstadt's Paulusviertel .

Architecture and history

In 1904/05, the architect Paul Meissner (also: Paul Meißner) won the competition to build the new Landeshypothekenbank. The foundation stone was laid in 1906 - the inauguration took place in 1912.

The bank building on Paulusplatz is the architectural counterpart to the Pauluskirche and flanks the west side of the urban planning attractive Paulusplatz. In 1944, the roof area of the administration building was severely damaged in an air raid; but later rebuilt true to the original.

The three-and-a-half-story building is a typical representative of traditionalism with echoes of the neo-baroque architecture of the late Art Nouveau period, which was common at the time of construction . The bright plastered facade with its strict window axes is interrupted by two massive risalits and a dwelling . The only adornments of the slate-roofed building are the cornices made of light natural stone and the lavishly designed portal with atlases by Augusto Varnesi .

A wide staircase leads to the former bank building, which stands on a plateau . There is a fountain on the plateau . The fountain sculpture comes from the Munich sculptor Karl Killer . At the southeast corner of the plateau there is a second fountain and a memorial.

The former state mortgage bank was placed under monument protection as a typical example of the architecture of the 1900s in Darmstadt . The building has housed the administration of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau since 1959 .
