The memorial of the infantry regiment “von Horn” (3rd Rheinisches) No. 29 was built between 1931 and 1933 on a hill in Rheinbrohl , the Rheinbrohler Ley.

history

The memorial was built as a substitute resting place for the 3,540 fallen soldiers of Infantry Regiment No. 29 in the First World War. It was designed by the head of the Mayen Steinmetzfachschule, sculptor and art professor Carl Burger . The Rheinbrohl location was chosen at the representatives' meeting in Cologne in 1927 and at the 1928 Regiment Day in Altenkirchen because it was almost in the center of the regiment's former recruiting area and because the memorial on the mountain can be seen from afar. A second memorial for those who fell in the regiment in the Franco-German War is located in Gravelotte near Metz and a regiment stone is in the Trier main cemetery .

The inauguration celebrations took place on 6/7. July 1933 on the occasion of a veterans meeting. In March 1945 the memorial was badly damaged during the heavy attacks on Rheinbrohl. At the beginning of the 1950s, former members of the regiment from the Bonn - Düsseldorf area and the Rheinbrohl community began securing the building with the help of former 29ers from the local area and the Rheinbrohl bachelor club. In 1958/59 the association of former 29ers and supporters of the memorial was founded, who took over the reconstruction with other supporters. In 1961 this was ceremoniously concluded. The association began then with 20 people and today (March 31, 2010) has 381 members nationwide.

architecture

The shape of a chapel distinguishes this memorial from many other war memorials. Inside, a is at the gable wall relief from ceramic affixed, the four Horsemen war, plague, starvation and death of the Revelation represents and about border sower. In the middle of the room there is a sarcophagus , in which the golden book with the names of the 3,540 fallen soldiers lies. Four large plates made of shell limestone are attached to the walls , on which the number of dead of the individual companies is recorded. There are also panels of the former Rheinbrohl war memorial with the names of fallen citizens. The two-winged entrance door is clad with sheet copper on which the biblical saying is written in raised letters: No one has greater love than giving up his life for his friends.

In the semicircle behind the memorial there is a number of basalt lava panels from the individual local groups of the former regimental association of the 29ers as well as the communities that participated in the reconstruction.

In the outer area of the war memorial chapel, a bronze soldier statue once stood on a stone plinth, which, however, was melted down during the Second World War. Covered information boards are set up next to the building.

tradition

The bearers of the memorial are the Neuwied district , the Bad Hönningen community and the Rheinbrohl community. Care and maintenance are taken care of by the association of former 29ers and supporters of the Ehrenmal e. V. Rheinbrohl and members of the Rheinbrohler bachelor club and the volunteer fire brigade . For some years now, the neighborhood Die Gaulentaler and the outskirts of the residential and nursing home Arienheller have also been helping mentally disabled people.

The central event during the year is the supra-regional reminder and memorial hour for all victims of war, terror and violence on Memorial Day . As a special greeting of peace from the Rheinbrohler Ley, an illuminated Christmas tree has been set up every year on the first Advent since 1958. Like the memorial, this is visible from afar across the Rhine.

The memorial is depicted on a Rheintaler .
