The badge of honor of the state of Saxony-Anhalt was donated on April 19, 2000 by the then Prime Minister Reinhard Höppner as a state award and has since served as recognition for excellent voluntary work for all citizens of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . Before the renaming in 2003, the award was called the "Minister President's Badge of Honor".

Eligible persons

The badge of honor is personally awarded by the Prime Minister to people who have earned appropriate services in voluntary work for a long time and are worthy of this award. For honorary activities for which a separate badge of honor has already been awarded, the badge of honor is not taken into account when awarding the badge, i. H. the person to be lent can be honored with the badge of honor in addition to an award already received.

Appearance and texture

The badge of honor shows an eight-pointed red Maltese cross . On the middle medallion the coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt can be seen, which is surrounded by the inscription: Ehrennadel des Landes (formerly "Ehrennadel des Ministerpräsident"). The badge of honor is worn on the upper left side of the chest.

Authority to apply

Every person has the right to make suggestions for the award of the badge of honor and to submit them to the bodies authorized to make proposals. Positions entitled to make proposals (sorted in descending order) are:

  • the members of the state government,
  • the President of the State Administration Office,
  • the district administrators as well
  • the Lord Mayors of the independent cities.

The application must contain the following information:

  • Surnames and first names,
  • Address, date and place of birth,
  • Profession at the time of proposal as well
  • a detailed justification for the proposal as well as titles, medals or decorations already received.

The proposals then submitted will be treated confidentially and checked. If necessary, the person entitled to make a proposal will obtain statements from third parties in order to be able to better assess the local and factual reference to the (voluntary) activity. The worthiness of the person in question is also determined by a certificate of good conduct issued by the Federal Central Register .

Award practice

The awarding of the badge is done by the Prime Minister and thus underlines the importance of this badge as a national award. In individual cases, the Prime Minister can delegate the conferral authority to another person. When the needle is handed over, the entrusted person receives a certificate signed by the Prime Minister, which bears the official seal of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.

Withdrawal of the badge of honor

The badge of honor can also be withdrawn again in those cases in which the wearer proves himself unworthy of the award by his behavior, or if such behavior only became known after the award. In these cases, the Prime Minister can withdraw the award and the certificate. Pieces that have already been loaned must be returned.
