The Eichgraben near Zipfen is an extensive natural monument in the municipality of Otzberg , Lengfeld district in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district , southern Hesse.

location

The "Eichgraben bei Zipfen" natural monument is located in the Reinheimer Hügelland natural area . It is located east of Otzberg-Lengfeld and north of the hamlet Zipfen, about 700 meters north of the federal highway 426 . The area of ​​the protected area is about 2.8 hectares.

Protection purpose

The "Eichgraben bei Zipfen" is a former sandstone quarry . The natural monument was designated by ordinance of August 7, 1991, published in the Darmstädter Echo on August 10, 1991. Reasons for protection are natural history and scientific reasons as well as the rarity, uniqueness and beauty of the area.

In the east, the steep walls of the former quarry limit the protected area, in the west the Eichgraben runs in a south-north direction. The area includes woody stands and several meadows in which autumn crocus and large two-leaf bloom. In the northeast, between the path and the Eichgraben, rises a former spoil dump from the quarry, which is overgrown with a dry meadow and contains some specimens of orchid orchid . The diverse area is home to around 40 species of birds, two species of bats, sand lizards and slow worms . Eight species of grasshopper, including the meadow grasshopper , and 20 species of butterflies have been identified.
