The Eiersberg is a mountain near Mittelstreu in Lower Franconia with a hilltop settlement, which has been proven for the early Iron Age .

geography

The mountain is a long ridge and borders with a steep slope on the east side directly on the course of the Streu (a tributary of the Franconian Saale ) at the place Mittelstreu.

At the foot of the mountain there are several springs with a very high discharge that directly feed the litter.

The hilltop settlement

The hillside settlement is located on the plateau of the mountain on the eastern steep slope towards the streu. A steep valley protects the facility on the north side. The fortification, a 130 m long and up to 2 m high wall, can still be seen on the southwest side of the site. In the interior with around 13,000 m², the excavations open up rows of houses that are aligned on the rampart with their long side towards the inner open space. These buildings were used as residential buildings and storage buildings.

More recent excavation phases in 1982 and 1985 with more detailed archaeological investigations currently result in the following development phases for the hilltop settlement:

  • first inspections probably from the Mesolithic , the older and especially the young Neolithic ;
  • intensive settlement in the Hallstatt period ;
  • Largest expansion phase in the 4th century BC with the replacement of the old ramparts with a post slit wall and an almost 17 m wide ditch
  • further usage phase in the 7th century AD

Archaeological finds are ceramics , arm rings, fibulae, elements of costume, parts of metal objects and parts of bronze vessels. The complex is one of the most extensively researched monuments of the Iron Age in Lower Franconia.
