The southern slope of Protschenberg in Bautzen - the scene of the Easter egg pushing

The egg rolling , colloquially usually only eggs Slide , Upper Sorbian Jejkakulenje , in Brandenburg as eggs tailspin as and in East Friesland Eiertrullern known, an on Easter Sunday exerted custom in which children Easter eggs can roll down a hill.

Bautzen

The custom has been practiced in Bautzen for over 400 years and is the main tourist attraction of the city at Easter alongside the Easter riding and painting of Sorbian Easter eggs .

The event takes place on Protschenberg above the Spree opposite the old town of Bautzner and was first mentioned as egg rolling in 1550. The forms and rules were varied:

In the original form, children from wealthy families rolled eggs and other objects down the slope, which were then picked up by children from poor families.

In later times the Easter egg pushing was organized equally for all children. Hard-boiled eggs, apples , oranges or other half-round objects were rolled down the mountain. The children of Bautzen and the surrounding area stood on the slope of the mountain and tried to catch the objects.

In a modified form, children let eggs roll down the slope. The winner was the one whose eggs remained intact, covered the furthest distance or who ended up with the most unbroken eggs.

Nowadays, colorful plastic balls are used that can be exchanged for prizes.

Egg pushing in other places

Easter egg pushing is also known in Eastern Styria. In parts of Brandenburg (e.g. Brandenburg on the Havel and in the Prignitz ) as well as in the Altmark , this tradition is practiced under the name "Easter egg trudeln".

In Perleberg ( Prignitz district ) the hard-boiled eggs are "tumbled down" one after the other in a competition. Whose egg has rolled the shortest must collect all the eggs in the group and bring them back up the slope. Eggs with damaged shells must be eaten immediately. Due to the small number of suitable areas (there are only a few surveys), there is a certain concentration of "egg tummers" with the character of a folk festival in certain places (e.g. vineyards).

In East Friesland there is also the custom of the "egg truller" on Easter Sunday. Mostly on the dike this trulling is carried out as a competition with family or friends. While smaller children let the hard-boiled eggs roll down from the top of the dike, the older ones literally toss them. In each round, all damaged eggs, the least thrown egg and any eggs thrown into the North Sea are eliminated. The remaining players then throw in the next round according to the distance achieved in reverse order - until a winner (ei) has been determined.

In Maienfeld , Switzerland, on Easter Sunday on the so-called “Eierbühel” (“Egg Hill”) between Rofels and Bovel, the “Eiertrööla” takes place. Depending on the time of Easter and the growth of the grass, the eggs are drilled (rolled) down the slope or thrown like balls. Whoever throws the furthest egg or survives the most throws wins. In the past, the Easter custom was popular with many children in the community, today it is only practiced by a few families.

Egg rolling has long been practiced in the White House garden , with the President and his wife inviting children with their parents.
