Eileen Derbyshire

Eileen Derbyshire (born October 6, 1931 in Urmston , Greater Manchester ) is a British actress . She played the character 55 years (1961 to January 2016) the role of Emily Bishop in the television series Coronation Street , making her the longest-serving female actress in a British soap opera .

life and career

Eileen Derbyshire attended the Northern School of Music in Manchester and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. When she passed the Chorlton Repertory Theater on the bus one day , she asked for an audition spontaneously. So she was enrolled as a student and later worked as deputy stage manager. From there she made her way to the touring company of the Century Theater , which has performed throughout the country and subsequently throughout Great Britain. She also worked on radio plays on the radio. After several small television plays, she was cast for the television series Coronation Street and played here from January 1961 to 2016.The character was given the first name Emily in 1962.

On April 1, 1965, Derbyshire married retired engineer Thomas W. Holt, and the following year they had their son Oliver, who later became a sports journalist. The couple lived in a holiday home in Cheshire and Derbyshire, interested in opera, reading, concerts and holidays in Vienna and Venice .

Derbyshire is known for its seclusion. She never joins other contributors at awards shows or other events, and has never appeared in any of the promotional videos for the Coronation Street website. She was only seen on television twice outside of her series role, when she gave a rare interview in a documentary about actress and good friend Margot Bryant in 1988, and when she agreed to be interviewed for an ITV program for deaf viewers in 2005. She talked about working with the deaf-mute actress Alison Briggs, who played Emily's niece Freda Burgess.

Eileen Derbyshire has three grandchildren of her son Olivers and is godmother of the three children of William Roache and also the daughter of Barbara Knox .

Derbyshire took a break from Coronation Street in December 2015 for personal reasons . The last episode she appeared in aired on January 1, 2016. Although originally only planning to take a six-month hiatus, Derbyshire has not resumed filming. A Coronation Street spokesman confirmed that "the door will remain open if she wants to return."
