A Picture of a Car is a 2015 Canadian animated short film directed by Claude Cloutier .

action

A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air starts up, the tank is full. The car, illuminated by a spotlight, begins to sing the song Que Sera, Sera . A deep pump starts its work of oil production standing on the globe, while the first refrain sounds. Oil production pipes are shown.

More vintage cars join the second stanza until six cars sing the next refrain. Three pumps deliver oil to the rhythm of the music, gasoline flows and the petrol pump shows high tapped gasoline liters. The floats perform a choreography, dance rhythmically, swim in the water and fly in the air. Meanwhile, oil production is increasing rapidly, as is gasoline consumption. The first cars are breathless. The oil delivery system is reaching its limits, the deep pump from the earth allows more air to escape from the earth with each pumping cycle until the ball bursts. The old timers plummet from their highs, numerous individual mechanical parts also fall. At the end the first oldtimer sings the chorus on its own, with scrap cars piled up in the background. It turns out that the singing car is shown as a film on a drive-in cinema screen, with numerous cars in front of it watching the film.

Cloutier said he made the film because he wanted to make a film with singing cars. He also found the anthropomorphic side of cars fascinating. The film was initially drawn by hand, whereby Cloutier worked with a brush, drawing ink (“India Ink”) and water in order to obtain different shades of color. The film consists of around 8,000 hand drawings. This was followed by post-coloring on the computer with After Effects , Toon Boom Studio and Photoshop . In contrast to earlier films, Cloutier did not use rotoscopy in An Image of a Car , but used model cars as a drawing template.

The song Que Sera, Sera was arranged by Jean-Phi Goncalves and sung for the film by Audrey Brossard , although it was slightly longer than the version by Doris Day .

A picture of a car was taken by the National Film Board of Canada and premiered on February 19, 2015 at the 33rd Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in Montreal. The film was also shown in June 2015 at the Festival d'Animation Annecy . Arte first broadcast a picture of a car on German television on June 20, 2015.

criticism

Arte described the film as "a not very serious homage to the power of the oil companies and the beauties that emerge from the vehicle industry." Director Cloutier said in an interview that he also wanted to make an "anti- cars film".

Awards

A picture of a car won the Prix Guy-L.-Coté Best Canadian Animation Film at the Sommets du cinéma d'animation 2015. It was nominated in 2016 for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Film.
