action

Taking advantage of the Christmas business, Jack Clayton participates in a robbery on a department store: This fails when the guards surprise him and his accomplice Harry. Jack has to flee without prey and ends up in the small town of Evergreen. Although he actually wants to travel on, he first works there as Santa Claus, because he arrived there in this disguise and they were waiting for Santa Claus. He met the single parent Sarah Gibson and her daughter Noelle. Since Jack is quite a rough leg, it is not easy for him to get involved with the "demanding" children. He offends many and does not behave at all as one would expect from Santa Claus. He is almost released on the first day and can only ask for a week's probation with a little persuasion. He had noticed the local bank that he is planning to rob and for which he needs some preparation time. Although he has this goal firmly in mind, he is influenced by the kindness of the locals as well as Sarah, with whom he falls in love. The latter displeases Doug Jennings, who has long been hoping for Sarah's affection, and he instructs Officer Tim Hogan to make inquiries about Jack. However, since he had introduced himself under a false name, the check remains inconspicuous. Jack is now beginning to feel comfortable in the small town and the nice people. He noticed on the first day that the small business owners suffer from the large shopping centers and that their sales are falling more and more. So he can convince people with a suitable advertising strategy to confront department stores in order to win back their customers. He can also score points with Sarah when he manages to dispel the allegation of shoplifting against Noelle. Even so, he's still determined to break into the bank. For this purpose he gets his old buddy Harry into town, whom he places in a shop right next to the bank. From there, Harry should secretly work his way through the house wall to the bank. However, this is not as easy as the two had imagined. It will take at least two explosions to get into the vault. Jack also develops a plan to solve this problem, although he is starting to get scruples. Harry urges him to keep going, however. He literally puts him under pressure and threatens to harm Sarah and Noelle otherwise.

On Christmas Eve, when half the town is in church, the bank break-in is supposed to take place. While Harry is doing the blasting, Jack is supposed to attend the service with the people. Everything is going as planned, but Jack has definite concerns. He leaves the community and wants to stop Harry. With that he betrays the plan and both are caught and arrested. At the public trial, Jack gets a lot of advocacy from all the citizens, so the judge only sentenced him to one year in prison. Jack accepts the punishment almost gratefully because, in his opinion, he deserves it. He doesn't regret coming to Evergreen, because everyone here welcomed him without prejudice and he learned what warmth and true friendship are. When Jack is released shortly before Christmas after a year, Sarah and Noelle receive him, who have not hired another Santa Claus for their business and have been waiting longingly for Jack.
