According to DIN 8580, embossing is a mechanical process of a manufacturing process from the group of impressions , which is part of pressure forming .

When embossing, a forming tool applies pressure on a flat workpiece surface to deform it into a relief . In handicrafts (e.g. punch , goldsmith , blacksmith ), the resulting mark is usually imprinted on the surface in many manual sub-work steps . When using a device or an embossing machine , the embossing is done manually using leverage or automatically using a press in one work step.
