Population development of Flensburg. Above from 1436 to 2017. Below an excerpt from 1871

With the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century, Flensburg began to experience strong population growth. While around 12,000 people lived in the city in 1835, by 1900 there were already around 50,000. During the Second World War , the city suffered almost no war damage. After the war, over 30,000 refugees and displaced persons streamed into the city within a few months and the population exceeded the limit of 100,000 in December 1945 and made Flensburg a major city for a few years .

After the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, Flensburg increasingly benefited from the targeted settlement of military facilities that were intended to compensate for the city's peripheral location. In 1949 the population reached its all-time high of 105,585. In 1952 the number fell back below 100,000 and has continued to fall since then. Since German reunification in 1990, the number of soldiers has decreased by over 8,000. As of December 31, 2006, the “ official population ” according to an update by the Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein State Statistical Office was 86,630 (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).

, The following table shows the number of inhabitants of Flensburg for the respective territorial status. Up to 1792 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
