The railway on Ærø ( Danish Ærøbanen ) consisted only of a pier and a track connection to the nursery Paradiset in Ærøskøbing . The rail connection was owned by the ferry company A / S Dampskibsselskabet Ærø .

The railway ferry route between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg and the railway facilities at the harbor were inaugurated on July 17, 1931, after the first ship sailed on this route on October 9, 1875. The ferry service with railway wagons was stopped in 1995, A / S Dampskibsselskabet Ærø was the last non-state shipping company in Denmark to transport railway wagons.

Traces of the former railway connection could be found in Ærøskøbing for a few years. A freight wagon and a piece of track recall the time when the companies in the port area got their deliveries by railroad car. There was never regular rail traffic on Ærø .

The freight car was auctioned at the end of 2012 and had to be removed by the end of the year.

Planning

In 1929 the construction of a railway line on Ærø was planned, which should lead from Marstal via Ærøskøbing to Søby . From Marstal there should be a train ferry to Rudkøbing on Langeland , as well as another train ferry from Ærøskøbing and Søby to Svendborg and Fåborg on Fyn . These plans were never carried out.

Used ships

The single-track steamship Ærø , which was available until 1967, was used as the first railway ferry . The ship could accommodate four freight cars. In 1951 the ship was overhauled and extended. After the Ærøsund went into operation in 1960 , the ship was only used at peak times until 1967.

From 1955 to 1958 the Ærøskøbing drove , which could also accommodate four freight cars.

On May 28, 1960, A / S Dampskibsselskabet Ærø took over the new motor ferry Ærøsund (873 GT) from the Husum shipyard . It had space for 40 to 42 vehicles or six railroad cars. With two MaK - diesel engines of 54.75 m long and 9.32 m wide reaching new a speed of 13  knots at a depth m of 2.5. It was Denmark's largest private railway ferry and could carry 700 passengers between Svendborg on Fyn and Ærø.

In 1969/1970 the Lolland was temporarily in operation on this line, which normally ran between Spodsbjerg and Nakskov or between Rudkøbing and Svendborg.
