The Ærøsund II was a Danish combined Ro-Ro and railway ferry that operated from 1960 to 1999 under the name Ærøsund between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg . In 1970 Søby Motorfabrik & Stålskibsværft on Ærø saw the first conversion , during which the forecastle was covered.

The ship was the largest private rail ferry in Denmark. On January 1, 1995, when Det Ærøske Færgetrafikselskab A / S took over the ferry service, the transfer of railway wagons to the island of Ærø ended .

Decommissioning

In 1999 it was replaced by the Ærøskøbing ferry and sold to the artist agency Danartist APS . The ship was used for cultural events from 2001 to 2005 from the new berth in Odense .

The ferry was included in the list of ships worth preserving ( Bevaringsværdige skibe ) in 2000 . From 2005 to 2009 the ship belonged to Svendborg Shipping Management ApS and at that time was still largely in its original condition and well maintained in Svendborg.

Further usage plans

In 2012, the company Naturturisme I / S developed plans to sink the ferry at a location off Funen that has yet to be determined . There it is supposed to form an artificial reef to attract marine life and scuba divers.

The Danish Environment Minister Kirsten Brosbøl initially rejected the dumping because the coastal authority ( Danish Kystdirektoratet ) and the Ministry of Transport, as the competent judicial authorities, had decided against the project. A little later, the decision was revised and the ship sunk on October 5, 2014 off Funen near Svendborg .
