The railway infrastructure company Aurich-Emden mbH ( EAE ) is a railway infrastructure company based in Aurich , which has operated the 13-kilometer-long Abelitz – Aurich railway in East Frisia since 2008. The managing director is Berend Voss . In Abelitz , the single-track branch line connects to the Rheine – Norddeich Mole line operated by DB Netz AG. The line is operated as an industrial trunk line and has a maximum speed of 25 km / h due to the numerous level crossings to private properties.

Shareholder

The shareholders are both public and private organizations:

proportion of Shareholders
51% City of Aurich
48% Enercon
1 % Dungeon concrete

The founding partners of the district of Aurich and the city of Emden have resigned. The two private shareholders are also the first freight customers to use the railway line. Since the train path fees do not cover the costs, there is an annual deficit of around EUR 100,000. The debts that arose up to 2012 were partially repaid by the shareholders at the end of 2013.

history

Crossing of the B 72 during construction, October 22, 2007

After goods traffic on the branch line (Emden–) Abelitz – Aurich was discontinued in 1996, there was initially little prospect of a route reactivation. However, there were individuals who continued to work on resuming rail traffic. Finally, the Enercon company was interested in shifting road transports, which are becoming increasingly difficult and, due to the size of the rotor blades, require approval to rail. Due to the financial commitment of the wind turbine manufacturer and the city of Aurich, the groundbreaking ceremony for the route renovation was celebrated on September 2nd, 2006.

After a year and a half of construction and construction costs of 10.2 million euros, the Abelitz – Aurich railway was officially opened on April 4, 2008 in the presence of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Christian Wulff .

On November 9, 2008, the Aurich - ran an die Bahn association kept the promise to resume rail traffic with two special trips between Aurich and Emden, which it had made in 1996 by issuing tickets for DM 10  to 1,600 interested parties. The Ubbo-Lorenz-Express , named after the initiator, was hauled by the V 100 of the Ostfriesland-Oldenburg mbH (egoo) railway company .

In the first year after opening, the route was already used by over 5,000 trains.

Since then, Enercon and its railway company egoo have been using the route for the weekday transport of wind turbine components for shipping in the port of Emden . For the rotor blades, some of which are more than 40 meters long, four-part low - loader wagons are used, which were specially designed for transports with excess loading dimensions . A transport volume of 3,000 wagons was expected for 2009.

In 2009, Enercon put a new loading station with a 64-ton crane into operation in the Tannenhausen industrial area in order to improve the transport logistics . An increase in the clearance profile of the route is planned in order to relocate further heavy loads that exceed the loading gauge from road to rail . In addition, the maximum line speed is to be increased from the current 25 km / h to 50 to 80 km / h. As a result of this route expansion, local rail passenger transport between Aurich and Emden with a journey time of less than 30 minutes will again be possible from 2014 . At the end of June 2011, the planning services were put out to tender by EAE, with the main objective being to widen the loading gauge to 5.05 meters on the extended route between Aurich Nord and Emden Seaport for the transport of the wind turbines. In February 2015, however, the EAE Supervisory Board decided not to expand the route, as this is no longer necessary due to the reduction in the size of the wind turbine components manufactured by Enercon.

Level crossings

Along the route there are a large number of technically unsecured level crossings (BÜ), many of which provide access from the houses directly adjacent to the main road that runs parallel to the route. These are marked with the traffic sign Andreaskreuz . If the level crossings are difficult to see, whistle boards are also set up along the route, forcing the train drivers to operate the loud horn. Because of the regular train traffic, including nightly, this has led to protests from local residents. At the beginning of July 2009, EAE and Enercon decided to deal with the complaints and, as a temporary solution, to stop the trains whistling. Instead, they now have to stop in front of the level crossing, which are each secured by an accompanying security guard. This procedure leads to longer travel times for the trains and is not silent due to the braking or acceleration of the trains. For this reason, the level crossing is gradually being technically secured by providing them either with light signals or massive rotating grilles .
