Sketch of the accident situation

The frontal collision of the trains occurred on a single-track section of the line running parallel to the Mangfall Canal at 29.5 km. The train occupied by former Wehrmacht soldiers came from the direction of Rosenheim , the empty train from the direction of Holzkirchen . The two locomotives were only slightly damaged in the impact, but several cars of the two trains derailed and some were pushed completely into one another. Five of the former soldiers lost their lives in the accident, and 21 others were injured, some seriously. Four of the dead were buried in Bad Aibling; the names of two were not known. Among the injured were the train crew and one of the engine drivers .

Cause of accident

Before the accident, the telephone lines and the communication lines between Bad Aibling and Kolbermoor had been interrupted for more than eight days. Communication between the stations was therefore not possible. The train journeys were carried out on sight.
