Bhangala railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The railway accident Bhangala was the head-on collision of two trains at the station Bhangala in Punjab ( India ) on 14 December 2004 due to dispatcher errors . 38 people were killed.

Starting position

The railway accident occurred on the single-track railway line between Pathankot and Jalandhar . The train protection was carried out here by means of a pull rod system : the dispatcher hands the locomotive driver an object whose possession allows him to drive into a certain section of the route. The agreement between the block offices about which train would receive a token was made by telephone.

An express train was traveling south from Jammu Tawi Station , the largest station in Jammu , with the destination Bhopal , and was heading for Jalandhar. A diesel railcar was traveling in the opposite direction in regional traffic .

the accident

The telephone connection along the route was disrupted. Without making a correct agreement about which train should receive a token, the dispatchers at the neighboring Bhangala and Mirthal stations gave each of the two locomotive drivers a pull rod so that both would enter the same block section in opposite directions. At 11:45 a.m., the two trains collided near the village of Mansar , about 10 km from the city of Mukerian . The locomotive of the train and the leading vehicle of the railcar were smashed. Of the locomotive crew, only the driver of the locomotive survived , but was seriously injured. Several cars of the diesel railcar and one car of the oncoming train derailed and some overturned.

consequences

38 people died and 50 others were injured.
