In the railway accident in Herceghalom occurred on December 1, 1916 at 12:24 in the station of Herceghalom , Hungary , at the Eastern Railway to edge ride a fast train in a shunting passenger . 69 people died.

Starting position

Emperor Franz Joseph , who was also King of Hungary , died in Schönbrunn on November 21, 1916 ; the burial took place on November 30, 1916. Numerous mourners from the Hungarian part of the empire were the railroad arrived. On the night of November 30th to December 1st, 1916, they were in two special trains and express train No. 3 on the return journey from Vienna to Budapest - which was in two parts due to the high volume of traffic . The trains were late.

The locomotive driver of the leading part of the express train 3 first ran over the distant signal at a speed of 76 km / h. He stated that he had not seen the stop announcement signaled there. He saw the main signal , which was standing 700 meters further and called for “stop” , and braked. Nevertheless, the express train hit the shunting passenger train 500 meters further in the flank. 7 cars of the passenger train and one saloon car and one 1st  class passenger car in the express train were smashed. All information about the perception of the signals and the braking process comes from the concerned locomotive driver. Tachograph and punctual train control to check this statement were not available.

69 people died, 164 were also injured, 60 of them seriously.
