In the Ludhiana railway accident on May 15, 2003, three sleeping cars on the express train No. 2903 Frontier Golden Temple Mail burned out near the Indian city of Ludhiana on the journey from Mumbai to Amritsar . 36 people died.
the accident
The fire broke out in the last car of the train around 3:45 am after the train stopped in Ladawal . A short circuit in a toilet was suspected to be the cause . The fire quickly spread to the adjacent cars . The doors of the cars were partially blocked and the windows were barred - a measure against theft and robbery - so that the travelers were locked in. Three cars burned out, a fourth was damaged. 34 dead were recovered in one car alone. The burning wagons were first detached from the rest of the train, which continued its journey towards Amritsar. The extinguishing work lasted three hours.
consequences
36 people died and 15 others were injured.
