Yangzhuang Railway Accident

The Yangzhuang railway accident was a rear-end collision on December 16, 1978 in Yangzhuang Railway Station ( Chinese  杨庄 站 , Pinyin Yángzhuāng zhàn ) in Lankao , Kaifeng , Henan , China . 106 people died.

initial situation

The express train No. 87 was on the night of December 15-16, 1978 from Nanjing to Xining and was very busy. The train was traveling at around 65 km / h.

The No. 368 passenger train from Xi'an to Xuzhou was parked in Yangzhuang Station .

accident

The drivers of express train 87 were overtired, inattentive, or perhaps even asleep. In any case, they heard the entry signal too late and braked too late. At around 40 km / h they passed the signal showing "Halt" . They braked hard and activated the warning signal, which was of no use, because they drove onto train No. 368, which was in the station. The accident occurred at 3:12 a.m. Several cars were smashed and the superstructure was also significantly damaged.

consequences

106 people died, 218 were also injured, 47 of them seriously. The route was closed for over nine hours.
