Ekaterina Trendafilova

Ekaterina Panayotova Trendafilova ( Bulgarian Екатерина Панайотова Трендафилова , also Ekaterina Panayotova Trendafilova , born June 20, 1953 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian legal scholar . From 2006 to 2015 she was a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague . Since January 12, 2017, she has been President of a special court ( Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor's Office ) in The Hague , which prosecutes war crimes committed in the Kosovo war under Kosovar and international law .

Life

After attending an English-language school (1967 to 1972), Trendafilowa studied law at the University of Sofia from 1972 to 1977 . She also completed a postgraduate course there until 1982 and received her doctorate in law and criminal justice two years later. As part of her academic training, she studied at the Institute for State and Law in Moscow in 1983 and 1985 ; she also carried out research from 1993 to 1994 as a Humboldt scholar at the University of Augsburg and in 1997 as a Fulbright scholar at the University of California .

Subsequently, Trendafilowa worked as a lecturer both at the University of Sofia (from 1984) and at the St. Cyril and Method University in Veliko Tarnowo (from 1995). From 1985 to 1989, in addition to her teaching activities, she also worked as a deputy public prosecutor at the District Court of Sofia, and from 1995 as a lawyer. She also taught as a visiting professor at Tōkai University in Japan (1993) and at the Law School of the University of California, Davis (1997). In 2001 she was appointed Full Professor at Sofia University.

Since 2004 worked Trendafilowa as European experts under the CARDS project (Community Assistance for Reconstruction, Development and Stabilization) "Establishment of an Independent, Reliable and Functioning Judiciary, and the Enhancing of the Judicial Co-operation in the Western Balkans" the European Commission . In this context, she visited Croatia , Montenegro and Albania the following year , made recommendations on the independence of the judiciary and human rights issues and was a speaker at a conference in Skopje on judicial reform in Macedonia .

Trendafilowa was also actively involved in the judicial reform in Bulgaria. From 1990 she worked on the drafting of reformed criminal law provisions and was entrusted as an expert for the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior with various legal issues, both in the area of criminal law and criminal procedure law as well as in the area of ​​human rights. In 2003 she advised the Legal Committee of the National Assembly on amendments and additions to the Code of Criminal Procedure and from 2004 to 2005 she was a member of the working group on a new Bulgarian code of criminal procedure, the working group on extradition law and the European arrest warrant , and the working group on mutual legal assistance.

On March 11, 2006, she was appointed judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague via List A for a term of nine years. She was a member of the Pre-Trial Division and chaired the Second Chamber, which was responsible for Uganda , Central African Republic and Kenya .

Trendafilowa is married and has a daughter who also works as a judge.
