Ekhard Salje (born October 26, 1946 in Hanover ) is a German-British mineralogist and crystallographer .

Career

Salje studied at the University of Hanover with a doctorate in 1971 (polar and lattice dynamic properties of ferroelectric KIO 3 ) and became professor for crystallography there in 1977 . In 1985 he went to Cambridge University, where he became Professor of Mineral Physics in 1992. From 1998 to 2008 he headed the Faculty of Earth Sciences at Cambridge. From 2001 to 2008 he was President of Clare Hall College.

Salje deals theoretically (including large-scale numerical simulation ) and experimentally with microstructures in crystals such as interfaces of twin structures and radiation damage in crystals, changes in elastic behavior at surfaces and due to instabilities at interfaces. Together with colleagues, he discovered superconducting twin interfaces in doped tungsten (VI) oxide .

He was co-author of a Royal Society report on nuclear waste.

Salje was visiting professor in Japan, China, Bilbao, Paris, Grenoble, Le Mans, at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences in Leipzig and he was an Ulam Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory . He also chaired the Cambridge – MIT Institute (CMI) program committee.

In 1994 he became a member of the Leopoldina and received the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal . In 2006 he received the Agricola Medal, in 1998 the Schlumberger Medal, in 2002 the Ernst Ising Prize and in 2000 the Humboldt Research Prize . He also headed the British section of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 1996 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 2006 he received the Federal Cross of Merit . He is a Knight of the Order of the Palmes Academiques . In 2010 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Art and Science in Barcelona. In 2001 he became an Honorary Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge.
