Ekkehard Drefke (born March 17, 1939 in Berlin ; died May 7, 2015 in Venice ) was a German artist.

Life

Drefke studied from 1959 to 1964 at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart with Rudolf Daudert , Christoff Schellenberger and Albrecht Appelhans . In 1966 he passed the first and in 1969 the second state examination. He carried out his first free artistic activities and exhibitions from 1966. From 1980 Drefke set up a permanent residence with a studio in his own home in Brühl .

While filming and taking photos in Venice for a new art project that he called "Venice - Lost Paradise", Drefke lost his balance, fell into the Grand Canal and could only be recovered dead.

Until 1986 Drefke mainly painted expressionistically abstracted landscapes and still lifes, then he increasingly divided the motifs into small-scale structures.

“Art and cultural history determine the themes of his [Drefke's] paintings: images that were known, but are covered in excess of media images, are forgotten. By including them as quotations in his paintings, Ekkehard Drefke refers back to them as the archetypes. His artistic method is to break it down into small structures and to bring them back into our consciousness via a synthesizing visual process. "(Prof. Dr. Heijo Klein)

In the 1990s, the artist invented flowing watercolors, in which small-scale structures come together as if by chance, sometimes "fabulous", to create new motifs.

After 2000, the media-interested artist developed a new style, “an artistic signature with a high recognition value. Using the 'flow method' he invented, he poured paints diluted with solvent onto the flat canvas. This resulted in extremely delicate color gradients with softly blurred contours from which the motifs emerged. Blurs and fades served the artist as stylistic devices. He was inspired by a database in which his own photographs, but also images from magazines and the Internet, were saved. Motifs from this archive found their way into his painterly work, which was based on well-founded cultural-historical knowledge. "(Hanna Styrie)
