Ekkehard II (St. Gallen)
Ekkehard II († April 23, 990 ) also Ekkehardus Palatinus , came to the monastery of St. Gallen as a boy in the middle of the 10th century and became known as a sequence poet.
Life
He was the nephew of Ekkehard I (Ekkehardus Decanus) . Around 973 he was by Hadwig , widow of Duke Burchard III. von Swabia , called on the Hohentwiel to teach them Latin . Hadwig later paved the way for Ekkehard to join the imperial court as chaplain of her uncle Otto I. Most recently he was provost of the cathedral in Mainz . He died on April 23, 990.
Ekkehard's unusual career and, not least, his privileged relationship with the Duchess of Swabia aroused great interest among the confreres in St. Gallen. Two generations after Ekkehard's death, Ekkehard IV included them in his monastery stories of St. Gallen (Casus sancti Galli) .
reception
Ekkehard's life is described in the historical novel Ekkehard from 1855 by Joseph Victor von Scheffel , which became a cult book of the Wilhelmine era.
After the novel, Johann Joseph Abert wrote an opera of the same name, which was premiered on October 11, 1878 in the Court Opera in Berlin.
In the course of the Middle Ages boom in the 1980s and 1990s, the story was filmed in the six-part television series Ekkehard from 1989 to 1990 (based on the novel by Joseph Victor von Scheffel; co-author and director: Diethard Klante ; production: 1989 André Libik, RB) .
