geography

Ekwok is on the Nushagak River .

history

Ekwok means "end of the steep bank" and is the oldest continuously inhabited village of the Yupik on the river. Around 1800 the settlement was used as a base for fishing in spring and summer and for berry picking in autumn. In 1923, Ekwok was the largest settlement along the river. A school was built in 1930. Until the post office opened in 1941, mail was delivered using sled dogs from Dillingham. Many of the original houses in Ekwok were built near the riverside. After a severe flood in the 1960s, the villagers moved to higher ground, to the current location. Ekwok received city rights in 1974.

traffic

In 1960, Ekwok Airport began operations. Small boats, quads, and snowmobiles are the most common local modes of transportation.
