El Jícaro is a town with around 4,500 inhabitants and a municipality in the El Progreso department in Guatemala . It is located almost 100 km northeast of Guatemala City and 29 km east of Guastatoya on the Río Motagua at an altitude of 245 m. A few kilometers north of the town runs the important CA 9 Atlantic highway , which connects Guatemala City with Puerto Barrios . El Jícaro has a station on the railway line running parallel to CA 9, which was closed in 2007.

The 249 km² municipality is located in the southwest of El Progreso and extends from the valley of the Río Motagua to the mountains in the south. It has a total of about 14,000 inhabitants. In addition to the main town El Jícaro, the municipality consists of the seven "rural communities" ( Aldeas ) Paso de los Jalapas, Las Ovejas, El Espíritu Santo, Los Bordos de Barillas, Lo de China, Agua Caliente and El Pino. There are also the seven hamlets of El Tambor, La Palma, Piedra Ancha, Ojo de Agua, Santa Rosalia and Las Joyas.

Adjacent municipalities are San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán and San Agustín Acasaguastlán in the north, and Guastatoya in the west. El Jícaro borders the Jalapa department in the south and Zacapa in the east .

El Jícaro used to have the indigenous names Xicalli and then Xicaros , referring to a local Maya tribe. Until 1908 the place was under its Spanish name a rural community of the Municipios San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán and belonged with this to the Department Zacapa. At the end of August 1908, El Jícaro became an independent municipality in the new department of El Progreso.

In 1872 the future President of Guatemala José María Orellana Pinto was born in El Jícaro.
