El Pepe: A life at the highest level ( El Pepe, Una Vida Suprema ) is a documentary by the Serbian film director Emir Kusturica . The film portrait highlights excerpts from the life of José “Pepe” Mujica , the former President of Uruguay .

The film shows important stages in Mujica's private and public life, starting with his twelve-year imprisonment as a political prisoner during Uruguay's military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s . However, the focus is on his ideals and convictions, which the director sees and represents reflected in the form of the simple, economical way of life, but also the politics of Mujica. A large part of the photos were taken on Mujica's small farm, where he lives as a flower grower.

Filming began in 2013 and was completed in 2015. The documentary premiered at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival , where it was shown out of competition.

The film has been available on Netflix since the end of 2019.
