El año de la peste ( The Year of the Plague) is a Mexican film from 1979 covering the genres of drama , thriller and science fiction .

Strange deaths occur in a large city with 15 million inhabitants: two doctors are beginning to suspect that the cause is not simple pneumonia, as initially suspected, but that it is an epidemic disease similar to the medieval plague. But both the authorities and the media alarmed by them deny this and for the most part remain inactive or wait and see in order to avoid fear and horror.

The film is based on the book The Plague in London by Daniel Defoe , which Gabriel García Márquez adapted for the film.
