El noi de la mare , Catalan The mother's boy is a traditional Catalan Christmas carol and also a lullaby . The author is anonymous and the origin is unknown. Therefore, different versions of it have come down to us. A version from 1866 has survived, which was added by Francesc Palagi Briz and Cándido Candi y Casanovas to the collection of songs Cançons de la terra (1866–1884), one that was included in Chantics by Jacinto Verdaguer, and one that was published by the Biblioteca Popular de L'Avenç was published in 1909.

According to Josep Romeu y Figueras, there are two versions, a shorter one and another, longer and more banal.

The song consists of ten-syllable verses in which the first, fourth, seventh and tenth syllables are strongly emphasized. This strongly emphasizes the rhythm of the melody. Two verses each form a parallel structure.

history

The exact date of the song's creation is not known. There is not enough evidence. But it is likely that this song had its origins in the 18th or 19th century. It is believed that this song was originally a nursery rhyme or lullaby and that, without being Christmassy or religious, it eventually made it into the repertoire of Christmas carols. Some authors have found points of contact between this Catalan song and a Galician muiñeira (dance). Some even believe it is the same song. Others believe that it is the same melody, with a very similar text, although in different languages, and that it is sung not only in Galicia but also in other regions of Spain.

Many adaptations and arrangements of the popular song have emerged in recent history. For example, Raquel Meller , who has spent a good part of her life in Barcelona , recorded various songs in Catalan. The most emotional of these is the adaptation of the folk song El noi de la mare , which Raquel recorded in Paris in 1926 . The arrangements of this song for guitar by Miguel Llobet are famous . In addition to her influence on Catalan artists such as Emili Pujol, she spread knowledge of the song in Europe and the USA . Although there is no custom in Argentina to sing Christmas carols, El noi de la mare is a very popular lullaby there with a Spanish text translated from Catalan. It was probably brought to Argentina by Catalan immigrants. The music appears in its entirety in the introduction by Captains Courageous (1937), arranged by Gus Kahn and Franz Waxman. The song revealed to Leon Trotsky's murderer , Ramón Mercader , that one of his prison guards was a Catalan because he heard him hum.

Honey quark ( Mel i mató in Catalan ), quark doused with honey and often also with nuts, is a traditional Catalan dessert.

“Between Easter and Palm Sunday” ( Spanish entre Pascuas y Ramos ) is a fixed expression in Spain for “now and then” or “very seldom.” The last two lines mean: “At some point they will mature.”
