Eleazar ben Jose ben Chalafta
R. Eleazar ben Jose ben Chalafta (also: Eleazar ben Jose ben Chalafta ) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, is counted among the fourth generation of Tannaites and worked in the second century AD.
Even when his father was alive he was so important that he often quoted his sayings. Eleazar preached charity and philanthropy. With representatives of the Samaritans he argued violently about the belief in an immortal soul and about their holy mountain Garyzim . In particular, he accused them of the fact that their scriptures were the product of a forgery.
Eleazar is said to have traveled to Rome with Simeon ben Jochai and there saw the temple treasures plundered by Titus . The purpose of the mission was to attempt to review the existing Hadrian anti-Jewish laws. The trip was successful, the decrees were repealed.
