The Elektra is an electrically powered ferry operated by the Finnish shipping company Finferries . The ship entered service in June 2017.

history

The Elektra was built under construction number 310 at the Polish Crist shipyard . The construction contract was signed on October 28, 2015. The keel was laid on June 28, 2016, the launch on February 17, 2017. The ferry was completed on June 15, 2017.

The Elektra was baptized on May 29, 2017. It has been running every 15 minutes on the 1.6 km long connection between Parainen and Nauvo since June.

technical description

The largely electrically operated ferry is a hybrid ship , as it receives the electrical power as drive energy from two lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 530 kWh each or, alternatively, from diesel engines that drive two generators . The batteries typically charge in around five minutes during loading and unloading. The diesel generators are only used in ice conditions or in the event of a battery failure. The electric propulsion system for the ferry was supplied and installed by Siemens . The drive power of 2 × 900 kW is provided with an operating voltage of 690 V. Three diesel generators with 420 kWe each were installed for the internal power supply, and solar cells were also installed on the upper deck.

The ferry can carry around 90 cars on five lanes. The number of passengers and crew is 375 people.
