Elfriede Abbe

Elfriede Martha Abbe (born February 6, 1919 in Washington, DC , † December 31, 2012 in Manchester , Vermont ) was an American sculptor , wood engraver and illustrator of botanical works. She self-published her works on a press in her studio.

Life

Elfriede Abbe was born in Washington DC in 1919 to Cleveland Abbe Jr. and Frieda Abbe, née Perman. Her brother was the botanist Ernst C. Abbe (1905–2000). Abbe graduated from Cornell University's College of Architecture in 1940 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . She was a student at HP Camden and Brenda Putnam . She worked as an illustrator at Cornell University from 1942 until her retirement in 1974.

She moved to Manchester, Vermont in 1974 and was a member of the Southern Vermont Arts Center . In Braunschweig , her mother's hometown, she set up a scholarship at the Herzog-August-Bibliothek to support commemorative concerts.

Elfriede Abbe died on December 31, 2012 in Manchester, Vermont.
