Eli Amir

Eli Amir ( Hebrew אלי עמיר; * 1937 in Baghdad ) is an Israeli writer who was born in Iraq and who emigrated to Israel in 1950 .

life and work

In Jerusalem he studied Arabic language, literature and the history of the Middle East and worked in the Ministry of Immigration. He was the personal advisor to Shimon Peres , an advisor on education issues and peace negotiations under Golda Meïr and Jizhak Rabin .

He is currently a lecturer at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva .

He published several novels, all of which became bestsellers in Israel.

These books tell of the difficult search for identity of emigrated oriental Jews and the difficult work of building up the state of Israel.

2008 awarded him Tel Aviv University , the honorary doctorate . The Bar-Ilan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2011.
