Life

Marks was one of the outstanding personalities of the Jewish community in Hamm .

The merchant lived at Südstrasse 6 in Hamm (old: Nro 559).

In 1820 he bought the Brandenburg-Prussian fiefdom Haus Caldenhof from the Wolframsdorf heirs for 18,300 thalers . In 1824 he bought Gut Wilkinghof in Berge . From 1841 to 1843 the businessman was also a city councilor . Together with Israel Gerson , Seligmann Bacharach , Levi Stern and Elias Spanier , Elias Marks bought the house at Martin-Luther-Straße 5 in 1842 in order to subsequently make it available to the Jewish community as a school and building site for a new synagogue. He did not live to see the construction of the new synagogue in 1868.

He also supported the school project of his son-in-law Alexander Haindorf in Münster with not inconsiderable funds. In 1825, Marks and Haindorf jointly founded the Marks-Haindorf Foundation , which was supposed to help Jewish children.

In his will, Marks founded the Marks Foundation in 1854 with the stipulation that it should support citizens of any denomination in need of help. The foundation includes interest from a chapter of 5,000 Reichsthalers and the rights to use a garden in southern Feldmark.

His tomb is on the Jewish part of the East Cemetery .
