Seligmann Bacharach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seligmann Bacharach (born December 15, 1789 , † November 26, 1880 in Hamm ) was a merchant of the Jewish faith in Hamm. He made a name for himself through generous donations to the Jewish community . In 1842, for example, he acted as one of the buyers of a property that was transferred to the municipality in 1865. This donation enabled the establishment of a Jewish school from 1846 and later the construction of the Hamm synagogue (1868).

family

Seligmann Bacharach's wife was called Bertha or Bila (1802–1868) and was the daughter of a man named Lipmann .

Life

The Jewish merchant was a member of a protection commission that had set itself the goal of taking preventive measures against cholera diseases. In 1837 he represented August Meese in the rifle club Hamm.

In 1840 he carried out a fundraising campaign for the Alexander Haindorf school project in Münster . The municipality of Hamm supported this fundraising campaign with the following appeal in the Westfälischer Anzeiger:

In the next week, Mr. Seligmann Bacharach will collect the mild contributions from residents of the local administrative district for the association for Westphalia and the Rhine Province, which exists in Münster under the direction of Professor Haindorff, for the education of elementary teachers and the promotion of craftsmen and arts among the Jews. The most recent annual reports testify to the charitable activity of the association, which promotes industry and the striving for higher education, and we recommend the institution of the philanthropic participation of our fellow citizens, however much in need of further aid.

Together with Israel Gerson , Elias Marks , Elias Spanier and Levi Stern , Seligmann Bacharach bought a plot of land and a house at Martin-Luther-Strasse 5 in 1842. The attempt to make this plot of land available to the Jewish community for the construction of a synagogue initially failed the lack of corporate rights of the municipality. At that time, the Jews in Hamm were not granted full equality, this only happened through the Prussian constitution of 1850. However, since the Napoleonic campaigns and the temporary incorporation of the County of Mark into the Grand Duchy of Berg , the Jewish population was no longer completely entitled to civil rights cut off so that they could now operate more freely than in the centuries before. For this reason, the Arnsberg district government at least allowed the community to use the building as a Jewish school from 1846.

However, the transfer to the property of the community only succeeded in 1866. Only then did the authorities sufficiently familiarize themselves with the new provisions of the Prussian constitution, which now granted the Jewish community full right to corporation. The donation was confirmed on September 12, 1966. The congregation was finally able to begin planning the new construction of their synagogue, which had already been decided in 1855 and which was put into practice in 1868.

Seligmann Bacharach is a city councilor for the years 1843 to 1847.

When he died in 1880, a memorial was erected in his honor in the Jewish section of the Ostenfriedhof , which can still be viewed there today. His wife also received such a memorial.
