Eligius Dekkers

Eligius Dekkers OSB , baptized Jan Dekkers (born June 20, 1915 in Antwerp , † December 15, 1998 in Bruges ) was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter in Steenbrugge ( Belgium ).

biography

Jan Dekkers entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter in Steenbrugge on October 9, 1933 and was given the religious name Eligius when he was professed on October 13, 1934 . He was ordained a priest on July 23, 1939 . He had mainly acquired his knowledge of philosophy and theology through self-study. He was particularly interested in liturgical science and patrology. He was influenced primarily by reading the writings of Romano Guardini , Pius Parsch and Odo Casel . In 1944 Eligius Dekkers was appointed lecturer for church history and patrology in the house study of his monastery. Later he lectured liturgical science and patrology at the Catholic University of Leuven. In 1967 he was elected abbot of the Steenbrugge monastery by his confreres, and on May 18, 1967 he was appointed. He held this office until 1978. In 1990 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Eligius Dekkers gained a great reputation through numerous scientific publications, but also through popular scientific writings. His most important achievement is the establishment of the Corpus Christianorum , a series dedicated to the publication of critical new editions of the works of the church fathers and church writers. For this series he himself developed the Clavis Patrum Latinorum , the directory of Latin church writers and their works. In his honor and to promote the work he has started, the Dom Eligius Dekkers Fund for the Edition and Transmission of Pre ‐ Modern Texts & Ideas was founded at the University of People .
