Elisabeth Joris

Elisabeth Joris (* 1946 in Visp ) is a Swiss historian .

Life

Joris grew up in Visp and has lived in Zurich since 1966. She studied history and French literary history at the University of Zurich . In 1980 she graduated from Rudolf Braun with a licentiate . She was a co-founder of the Critical Upper Valais group and the opposition Valais publication Rote Anneliese .

She worked as a middle school teacher and published numerous articles on women's and gender history in Switzerland. In 1986 she and Heidi Witzig published a pioneering collection of sources on Swiss women's history. In 2010 she received her doctorate from the University of Zurich. Joris was co-editor of the feminist magazine Olympe . In 2020 she received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich.

She is married and has two kids.
