Elisabeth Marbury (born June 19, 1856 in New York City , † January 22, 1933 there ) was an American theater and literary agent . As a theater producer , she represented well-known artists and writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Oscar Wilde , George Bernard Shaw , Cole Porter , Sir James Matthew Barrie .

Elisabeth Bessy Marbury grew up in a respected and wealthy merchant family. Their ancestors - including Anne Hutchinson - were among the first settlers of English origin in New York State . Marbury was never married, but lived openly in what many observers saw as a lesbian relationship with interior designer Elsie de Wolfe , later known as Lady Mendl.
