Life

Elisabeth Marie Charlotte was a daughter of Count Palatine Ludwig Philipp von Simmern (1602–1655) from his marriage to Marie Eleonore (1607–1675), daughter of Elector Joachim Friedrich of Brandenburg. The princess was born in Sedan, where her parents had fled after the Swedish defeat near Nördlingen .

She married on October 22, 1660 in Brieg as his second wife, Duke Georg III. von Brieg (1611–1664). The wedding, initiated by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg , was celebrated with great splendor. On the occasion of the wedding, the festival Das Verliebte Gespenst and Die amliebte Dornrose by the poet Andreas Gryphius premiered. As early as 1659 Gryphius had sent the princess his Papinian with an epigram .

Just two years after the marriage, the Duchess fell ill with a cough in 1662, which worsened in 1663. She died of tuberculosis on May 22, 1664 without giving birth to a child. Elisabeth Marie Charlotte was buried in the castle church in Brzeg.
